Tutors and Teaching

Director of Tuition – Ann Miller B.Ed, LRAM, ARCM

Ann Miller is an experienced performer and teacher of singing whose expertise in care and development of the voice is underpinned by her knowledge of major advances in anatomical and physiological understanding of the vocal mechanism.

Formerly a teacher of Music and English in mainstream schools, she has for many years worked exclusively as an independent singing teacher, vocal coach and choral director.

She teaches singing and voice at all levels from beginner to professional performer.

A full programme of training as a singing teacher is also available to suitable candidates

Ann Miller is a member of The Incorporated Society of Musicians, The Association of Teachers and Singing, The British Voice Association, The Voice Care Network and The Association of British Choral Directors.

Associate Tutors

A team of associate tutors assists Ann Miller in delivery of teaching at (or arranged through) The VoiceBox.  Lessons are provided at the centre itself, in local schools, and in other venues around the county. The associates are:

Dan Miller, Dip.ABRSM  (contact at The VoiceBox)

Veronica Cotterill, Dip.ABRSM (who also teaches in the Wirksworth area – Tel: 01629 824454)

Lynda Wilson MA, Dip.Mus (who also teaches in Belper – Tel: 01773 821898)

Colin Miller BA (contact at The VoiceBox)

Katharine Choonara (also teaches at Hilton - Tel: VoiceBox/07793 204437)

TEACHING AT THE VOICEBOX

VoiceBox tutors coach and advise on performance, presentation, confident voice use and voice care for all singing styles and for speech. They make particular use of elements of Alexander Technique, Pilates, and of the Estill Voice Training System. With their help you can enhance your vocal health and develop your performing skills, whatever your interest - solo singing, choirs, acting or music theatre, public presentation, or remedial work to alleviate vocal problems.

Singers are encouraged to study a wide range of songs and styles, and to work towards performances. When ready, they are offered solo opportunities at the regular informal concerts in the superb Voices Hall at The VoiceBox. Our more experienced singers are offered VoiceBox recital opportunities.

The VoiceBox is also the venue for singing examinations using the Special Visits schemes of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and of Trinity Guildhall.

VoiceBox singers are strongly recommended to take classes in Pilates and/or Alexander Technique as an essential part of the "whole body" approach to singing, particularly for posture and breathing.  Classes are sometimes available at The VoiceBox  or we can advise on alternative options elsewhere.

General musicianship, sight singing, aural awareness and theory of music are integrated into the lessons at appropriate levels as relevant, approachable elements.   Video feedback is available; and an audio cassette of piano accompaniments of songs can be recorded lesson by lesson, if you wish, to help with practice at home.

Lessons are held at The VoiceBox in the Maltings Studio or in the Archer Gallery, both of which have an excellent acoustic.
