Later, the building became a shoe and box
factory; and later still, became Arthur Clemson & Son Boxmakers.
During the 1980s, a serious fire caused considerable damage, and after
reconstruction the building was let in six units. Our unit became a
print factory until The VoiceBox began life on 25th September 2000.
Little is left of the inside of the
print factory and much work has been done outside too. We now have a
performance hall, two very attractive studios, and four offices across
the courtyard, with a real Arts focus and a lot of historical
interest.
Voices Hall is full of character
and is an ideal venue for small-scale performances, rehearsals and
conferences. It has a superb acoustic and comfortably accommodates an
audience of 80 - 100 people.

The atmosphere of the Archer Gallery
has already captured the interest of several local artists.
The shape of the spacious and
attractive Maltings Studio shows clearly its brewery heritage. It too
has a superb acoustic.
In February 2002, Derby Civic Society
awarded The VoiceBox First Prize in the Restoration category of the
Brighter City of Derby Awards.
